In March I visited a restaurant called The Big Mouth for lunch. It’s at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton and not too far from my husband’s work place. It wasn’t a planned lunch but I sure made the most of it.
I’d always wanted to dine there, purely based on the aesthetics – I’m a sucker for beautiful design, and being hungry and not at home was the perfect excuse! Lunch hour tends to be busy because Sandton is the business capital of Jo’burg and most people who work there, can afford to treat themselves to something other than McDonald’s at least a few times a week.
Let’s get to the menu! I absolutely loved the menu because it’s set up in such a way that you can sort of design your meal. They’re a grill and sushi restaurant and they have a wide variety of dishes to choose from. One thing they don’t have though are ribs and lamb shank – if that’s all you eat then this place might not be for you.
I ordered their lemon buttered calamari (it’s listed under their ‘small plates’ section on their menu), a roasted veggies side, as well as their parmesan mash. I feared their main meals might me too big and I still had to work afterwards. This meal worked out perfectly for my appetite and more so for my taste buds and at R150 was cheaper than most of the grills.
If you’re ever in the Sandton vicinity, I’d definitely recommend them. You can also visit their website (http://www.thebigmouth.co.za) to read up more about them, its so beautiful you might end up making a booking!
